Look inside...

Why a Comic?

While teaching intensive short term film programs, I realized my students needed a straight-to-the-point guide to get them familiar with essential filmmaking skills quickly. Text heavy manuals or watching hours of instructional videos
simply wasn't an option. One day in the cafeteria I spied a comic book that a student had left behind, something clicked,
and the idea for the Fimmaker’s Survival Guide was born. The comic format was ideal for communicating the complex principles of filmmaking. To this day, I'm surprised at how many texts attempt to teach a visual art form by typing out letters on a page. Some have photos, but often show only the result, and not the methodology. By combining text and illustrations, I was able to clearly explain these fundamentals. One illustration, "Crossing the Axis" was so successful, people who knew nothing about filmmaking were able to understand the concept without even reading the accompanying text.
Learning does not have to be dull, stoic or boring. In my world, buying a camcorder is an adventure, a robot and monster have a casual chat while a boom-op moves into position, ninja's demonstrate how to use shutter speed and planning your first film includes battling aliens in outer-space. Filmmaking is about imagination... I hope that the Filmmakers Survival Guide inspires you to let your creativity run wild, and bring all the ideas you have in your head to life. Tell your story, your audience is waiting… Cal Johnson
